Life Transitions:
Life transitions are usually about big changes in one or more aspects of our lives. They are periods in our lives that mark the beginning of something new. Life transitions can include starting a new job, moving to a different city, or a major life event such as a marriage, divorce, or the birth of a child. These phases of life can be both exciting and overwhelming at the same time. Life transitions occur for different people at different times and can cause varying degrees of stress.
What are common examples of life transitions?
Everyone will experience several life transitions. The most common transitions may include:
- Aging: Milestone ages from starting school at 5 or retiring at 65 can mark significant life changes
- Moving: Whether you’re moving from your childhood home, across the country, or even moving jobs can be transitionary
- Relationship changes: Including marriage, divorce, a fight with a family member, or even adding a new friend to a close-knit group
- Life: Having a child, adopting, or even welcoming a new pet can change the “normal” routine of your life
- Death: Losing someone you love can force you into a transition and coping with that loss can be difficult
- Health changes: Accidents, aging, surgeries or a difficult diagnosis can cause drastic shifts in your life
Why are life transitions so hard?
Even “good” or anticipated life transitions can be difficult. It is normal to experience stress or anxiety because you are required to adjust to an unfamiliar situation, which can be emotionally and mentally draining. Nearly all change brings grief and loss of what was familiar, even if the change is good. Transitions can disrupt social connections and support systems, leading to feelings of isolation.
Is it normal to be afraid of something good or exciting?
You’ve finally been offered your dream job making a lot more money! … But it’s in a different state, and you have to move your spouse and three kids. Exciting? Yes! Gut wrenching? Absolutely! Even good or exciting life transitions cause change. Resistance to change is a natural human response. So yes, it’s perfectly normal to have some stress or anxiety even if your life transition is wanted.
